Album of the Week #30
So I was listening to a lot of this band this week, particularily this album. And in case it isn’t already obvious why, I am going to write the rest of my post in green font and just hope you get the hint.
Irish. Celtic. Hardcore. Punk.
Four words, no more no less, that completely describe this Massachusetts based band. Looking at the wikipedia page on these guys, there is a lot of things I could write about, but I like simple blog posts that are short and to the point, so I shall do likewise.
If you like one Dropkick song, you like all Dropkick songs. And I know you like all Dropkick songs, because you already love one Dropkick song. The one that you heard in that Departed movie a few years ago:
Good. Now you can go check out the rest of their stuff, because it is all equally as awesome as this.
Eyeball.fm link: Dropkick Murphys
Album Singles: Walk Away, Fields of Athenry
Dav Suggests: Black Velvet Band, Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced, Fields of Athenry
Other Songs (on other albums): The Gauntlet (Sing Loud, Sing Proud), I’m Shipping Up to Boston (The Warriors Code)
Formed in 1996, these guys have been revolutionizing irish rock (as well as transforming traditional Irish folk songs into punk anthems) across 6 studio albums in the last 14 years. They have been part of many punk tours, such as Vans Warped Tour for years, as well as headlined a few tours themselves, and opened for bands such as Bad Religion.
Among many theories behind the naming of the band, band member Marc Orrell said:
“The Dropkick Murphy will come and get you if you don’t go to sleep tonight. It’s a rehab center, I think it’s in Connecticut. I think it was the guy who used to come around late at night for all the drunks, like if you were too drunk to drive home, he would come and get you and put you in this hole that you couldn’t get out until you were sober enough, I don’t know. There’s a bunch a stories, it’s also a boxer, a bunch of things, a rehab center in Connecticut, grandparents used to scare kids with it.”
